Laurene Powell Jobs to Participate in Maha Kumbh 2025, Given Hindu Name ‘Kamala’

Laurene Powell Jobs, widow of Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, has embraced a deep connection with Hindu traditions. Recently, she was given the Hindu name “Kamala” as she prepares to attend the Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj, starting January 13, 2025. This grand religious gathering is a significant spiritual event in India.

Currently in Varanasi, Laurene is set to arrive in Prayagraj on January 13 to participate in various Hindu rituals. She plans to stay at the camp of her spiritual guide, Swami Kailashananda, the Mahamandaleshwar of Niranjani Akhara, until January 29.

Swami Kailashananda confirmed that Laurene was given the name Kamala after being initiated into her guru’s Gotra. He shared that she regards him as a father figure, and he reciprocates by treating her like a daughter. “She has a profound interest in Sanatan Dharma and follows our traditions sincerely. This will be her second visit to India,” the Swami said, adding that she will immerse herself in the sacred rituals of the Kumbh.

Laurene is expected to take a holy dip in the Ganges River during the event, a central practice of the Kumbh Mela. Swami Kailashananda also noted that she adhered to the customs of Kashi Vishwanath Temple during her visit to Varanasi, respecting the practice where only Hindus can touch the sacred Shivling.

In addition to Laurene’s participation, the Niranjani Akhara will also celebrate the elevation of an American disciple, Maharshi Vyasanand, to the position of Mahamandaleshwar. Swami Kailashananda highlighted this milestone, marking a broader global connection to Indian spirituality.
