Tamil Nadu Weather Update- Heavy Rain in Chennai and Warnings for 5 Districts

Chennai has been experiencing a cool and overcast climate recently, with light drizzle occurring throughout the day yesterday. The weather took a turn during the early hours today, as heavy rainfall began from 2 a.m. onwards, particularly affecting areas like Kodambakkam, Koyambedu, Vadapalani, Choolaimedu, and Nungambakkam. The downpour caused significant water accumulation on low-lying streets, making the morning feel particularly chilly and damp.

Meteorological Department’s Alert and Forecast

The Meteorological Department issued a statement explaining that an atmospheric circulation is currently present over the southwestern Bay of Bengal, near the Tamil Nadu coast. This system is driving the rainfall across various parts of the state, with specific warnings for several districts.

On January 19, 2025, the forecast includes light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms in many parts of South Tamil Nadu, and isolated showers in North Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal. Heavy rain is expected in a few places in the districts of Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Ramanathapuram, and Tenkasi. Additionally, light fog is predicted in the mornings.

For January 20, 2025, light to moderate rain is expected to continue in parts of South Tamil Nadu, as well as in some places in North Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal.

On January 21, 2025, light to moderate rain will likely occur in one or two locations in South Tamil Nadu, while dry weather is forecasted to prevail in North Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal.

From January 22 to 24, 2025, the weather is expected to remain dry across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal, with no significant rainfall.

Weather Forecast for Chennai and Suburban Areas

For January 19, 2025, the sky in Chennai is expected to be partly cloudy, with the possibility of light rain in some areas of the city. Morning fog is also anticipated. The maximum temperature will range from 29°C to 30°C, while the minimum temperature is expected to be around 22°C to 23°C. These conditions will contribute to a cool, wet atmosphere in the city.

Fishermen Warning

The Regional Meteorological Center has issued an alert for fishermen in the coastal areas of Tamil Nadu, specifically in the Kumarikadal and Gulf of Mannar regions. On January 19, 2025, these coastal areas could experience cyclonic winds, with speeds ranging from 15 to 20 meters per second, and gusts reaching up to 55 kilometers per hour. Fishermen are strongly advised to avoid venturing into these waters due to the hazardous conditions.

Chennai and other regions in Tamil Nadu are expected to continue experiencing rainfall over the next few days, with varying intensities across different districts. Heavy rain is forecasted for parts of South Tamil Nadu, especially in districts like Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, and Thoothukudi. Residents are advised to stay updated with the latest weather reports, as conditions may change rapidly, and be cautious of potential flooding in low-lying areas. Additionally, fishermen should heed the warnings about strong winds in the coastal regions. As the week progresses, dry weather is expected to return from January 22 onwards, offering a break from the rain.
