India’s U19 Women’s cricket team continued their dominant run in the T20 World Cup
India’s u19 women’s world cup continued their dominant run in the T20 World Cup, defeating Sri Lanka by 60 runs to finish their group stage campaign unbeaten and secure a spot in the Super 6s. The victory came on the back of earlier wins against West Indies and Malaysia, with India clinching the top position in Group A with a perfect record of three wins from three matches. Their performance was even more impressive with a net run rate of +5.035, a testament to their all-around dominance.
India was asked to bat first in this crucial match. The team posted a respectable total of 118 runs for the loss of nine wickets. Gongadi Trisha, who had found her rhythm in the previous match against Malaysia, once again was India’s top scorer, contributing 49 runs off 44 balls. Despite her solid knock, she fell just short of a half-century when dismissed by Sri Lanka’s Manudi Nayanakkara. India’s innings didn’t get off to the best of starts, with G Kamalini and Sanika Chalke both dismissed early in the game. Sri Lanka’s Pramudi Methsara made an immediate impact by taking two wickets in one over.
The rain caused a brief interruption, but fortunately, no overs were lost. India’s captain, Niki Prasad, contributed 11 runs before she was dismissed by Aseni Thalagune. Trisha kept things going with her knock, but after she was dismissed, Mithila Vinod came in and boosted the score with a quick 16 runs off just 10 balls. Later, VJ Joshitha played an entertaining cameo, smashing a six and a four off Rashmika Sewwandi, bringing India closer to a total of 120 runs. The Sri Lankan bowlers—Methsara, Limansa Thilakarathna, and Thalagune—each claimed two wickets, but India managed to post a defendable total.
Sri Lanka’s chase, however, was a disaster from the start. India’s bowlers put on an intense performance, reducing Sri Lanka to just 26 for five during the powerplay. At one point, they were a shocking 12 for five in 4.2 overs, with the game effectively slipping out of their hands early. Shabnam Shakil was a key figure for India, taking two wickets, dismissing Sumundu Nisansala and Dahami Sanethma. Joshitha also played a major role, removing Sanjana Kavindi and Hiruni Hansika.
Sri Lanka’s captain, Manudi Nayanakkara, was run out in a disastrous mix-up with Rashmika Sewwandi, further compounding their woes. Sewwandi, who had been looking promising, fell soon after, dismissed for 15 runs off 12 balls by left-arm spinner Parunika Sisodia. The wickets kept falling, and Aayushi Shukla got in on the act by dismissing Shashini Gimhani.
In the end, Sri Lanka could only muster 58 runs for the loss of nine wickets, well short of India’s total. Parunika Sisodia delivered a brilliant spell, finishing with figures of 4-0-7-2, keeping things tight and economical. Vaishnavi Sharma, who had already showcased her talent in previous matches with a hat-trick and five-wicket haul, added a further scalp to her tally, ending with figures of 4-1-3-1.

With this win, India not only secured an unbeaten record in the group stage but also demonstrated their all-round strength, both with the bat and ball. They will now advance to the Super 6s with the confidence of knowing they are one of the teams to beat. Their dominant performance over Sri Lanka sends a strong message to the rest of the teams in the tournament, as they prepare for tougher challenges in the knockout stages.
