WhatsApp Outage Disrupts Messaging & Calling Services for Users Worldwide

WhatsApp experienced significant service disruptions on Friday evening, with thousands of users around the world reporting issues with undelivered messages. According to Down Detector, an outage tracking platform, over 4,400 reports were filed around 9 pm on Friday regarding WhatsApp’s functionality. The messaging app appeared to be down for many users across various regions, with no official response from WhatsApp or its parent company, Meta, at the time.

In addition to WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger also faced outages, which were tracked on DownDetector. Reports of these issues were particularly high in countries like the United States and India. In the U.S., more than 4,000 reports of WhatsApp disruptions were recorded, while India saw over 10,000 complaints. The United Kingdom was also affected, with more than 7,500 reports of WhatsApp issues. Major cities like London, Manchester, and Glasgow were some of the most affected areas. According to user reports, 59% of individuals had trouble sending messages, 22% encountered server connection problems, and 19% experienced issues with the app itself.

As expected, social media platforms lit up with people discussing the outage. Many users flocked to Twitter (now X) to confirm whether WhatsApp was down or if the problem was on their end. The hashtag #Whatsappdown trended in India as frustrated users vented their confusion and amusement. Some even posted memes about the situation, and a few joked about the situation, saying things like, “Stop toggling your Airplane mode on/off. It’s not your network, WhatsApp is down.” Others humorously wrote, “BREAKING: WhatsApp is down. 𝕏 is up.”

Interestingly, this outage came just one day after a similar problem hit Slack, the popular workplace communication platform. Like WhatsApp, Slack users faced connectivity issues, which the company later acknowledged. Slack stated that they were investigating the problem and revealed that some API endpoints, message sending, and loading threads were impacted. At the peak of Slack’s outage, over 3,000 users reported problems. However, the platform appeared to restore functionality by the next morning, with many of the key features returning, including direct messaging and group chats.

WhatsApp’s outage on Friday is not the first instance of major disruptions affecting Meta’s platforms. Last December, a global outage impacted WhatsApp, Facebook, and Instagram, leaving millions of users unable to access or fully use the apps. During that incident, DownDetector recorded over 105,000 complaints about Facebook, more than 70,000 for Instagram, and over 12,000 for WhatsApp. Meta later apologized for the disruption, explaining that the company was working to resolve the issues as quickly as possible.

In Friday’s case, while WhatsApp users struggled to send messages or connect to the platform, many took to social media to discuss their frustrations and seek confirmation. As one user quipped, “WhatsApp went down after someone asked me for banking details.” Another tweeted about their panic, writing, “Me running to X to see if WhatsApp is actually down or it’s my network,” along with a GIF showing people rushing down an escalator.

Interestingly, the outages came at a time when Meta’s platforms were already facing scrutiny due to frequent disruptions. As messaging apps have become crucial to daily communication, any downtime can cause significant inconvenience. Users who rely on these platforms for both personal and professional purposes are increasingly vocal about service interruptions.

Despite the widespread outage, there was no immediate statement from Meta regarding the cause of the issues or when the platform would be fully operational again.
