What is the issue of ‘Emergency’
Emergency Review: ‘Emergency’ imposed in theaters, did Kangana Ranaut pass or fail? Know the decision of the audience Kangana’s film begins with Indira Gandhi’s childhood.
Where she is seen angry with her aunt Vijay Lakshmi for keeping her TB-stricken mother away from people. Indu learns the meaning of words like ‘satta’ and ‘power’ from her grandfather. But the film does not want to spend time exploring the child’s state of mind and moves on.
From here the story starts focusing on Indira Gandhi’s political rise. Indira is seen making an effort to keep Assam, terrorized by the Chinese attack, connected to India. This effort is – climbing on the bonnet of the jeep, stopping the people who left their village and headed towards China by saying that everything will be fine.
Politically, what did Indira do that changed the situation in Assam? The film does not spend time on this. However, here the story focuses at least twice on how Indira’s father, India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, left Assam alone after the Chinese attack, while Indira saved Assam.
Now in the story, instead of supporting Indira’s political career, her father is seen promoting other leaders of the party. One part focuses on Indira’s relationship with Feroze Gandhi.
Here, Feroze’s character is seen saying that Indira married him to take revenge from her father. The film weaves both these things without any detail in such a way that Indira is seen making a political career only as a reaction to these men, and not for any ambition of her own.
The narrative structure of the entire film is this – Emergency shows all the political stories related to Indira’s life, scattered from social media to routine articles published on her birthday, one by one.
This film, which comes after Sanjay Gandhi’s political interference, the court case in Allahabad High Court regarding Indira’s election, the announcement of emergency and Operation Blue Star, finally comes to an end at the scene of Indira Gandhi’s assassination.
Emergency for what? ‘Emergency’ is a film of about two and a half hours, but there is an attempt to stuff so much into it that the film does not let you connect with its leading character at any point.
After every 5-7 minutes the film starts focusing on a new story, a new part of Indira Gandhi’s life and somehow seems to be in a hurry to cover her entire life. Running in this disorder, ‘Emergency’ starts looking like a PowerPoint presentation made on Indira Gandhi’s life in which the director keeps clicking quickly and the slides keep changing.
The biggest shortcoming of ‘Emergency’ is that the film does not let the audience connect emotionally or dramatically with its lead character anywhere. No moment has been explored in a halt. It seems as if ‘Emergency’ is competing with Indira Gandhi’s Wikipedia page in presenting stories and facts from her life.
Kangana Ranaut is not only the lead actress of ‘Emergency’, but also the director. Her narrative structure in the film is not clear as to what she wants to show. Because the film cannot be trusted in terms of facts, but that is a completely different issue.
The biggest problem is that in Kangana’s own vision, there is a lack of sympathy for her lead character. The camera captures the face of her lead character from a curved angle innumerable times.
As an actress, she also turns many expressions into piercing sharp-slanted smiles, which are mostly seen in villains or characters with negative tone in films. At two important moments of the formation of Bangladesh and the declaration of emergency, the film takes the form of a musical.
You can imagine for yourself how the characters of iconic leaders like Sam Manekshaw, Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Jai Prakash Narayan would have looked singing songs in lip-sync in the film.
Kangana Ranaut’s performance praised
Emergency Review: ‘Emergency’ imposed in theaters, did Kangana Ranaut pass or fail? Know the decision of the audience A user said, “Kangana is paying tribute to Indira Gandhi and she is not trying to compete with her. Instead of hating someone for a useless reason. If you like Indira Gandhi, then go and watch Emergency.”
Kangana’s direction is lacking, but as an actress she has always been so strong that no mistake is expected from her. But in ‘Emergency’ Kangana has treated Indira Gandhi’s character like a parody. She starts mimicking and tries to move every muscle of her face from every angle.
This parody continues throughout the film and the interest in the leading character of the film gradually ends. Although, in many scenes the strong actor inside Kangana also comes out on screen but in most of the scenes it remains hidden behind her over-acting.
Mahima Chaudhary’s presence and acting in the role of Pupul Jayakar is much better. In the scenes with Kangana, Mahima seems to be overshadowing her. Anupam Kher has done a good job in the role of Jai Prakash Narayan but the treatment of his character is very loose.
It would not be fun if Shreyas Talpade‘s effort to fit into the role of Atal Bihari is so clearly visible. The way Vishak Nair has played the character of Sanjay Gandhi should be taught in acting books as a ‘stunt never to try’.
Overall, ‘Emergency’ is a very confused, narratively scattered and tedious experience film. The film is in a hurry to show so much that it is unable to explore any character and is able to create only their popular social media versions on screen.
