IPL 2025 – Official Start Date, Complete Team Rosters, Final Match Details, and Key Updates

The schedule for the 18th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) has been revised slightly, with the tournament now set to begin a week later than previously announced. The new start date is March 21, 2025, in Kolkata, with the final scheduled to take place on May 25 at the same venue. This adjustment comes after earlier communications from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had suggested the tournament would run from March 14 to May 25. However, these dates were only provisional and not part of the final schedule.

The delay in the start of the IPL has been linked to a potential request from broadcasters, who are thought to have asked for a later start due to the Champions Trophy final taking place on March 9, just five days before the original IPL kickoff. However, this claim has been denied by sources within the broadcasting network. In any case, the exact details of the IPL 2025 schedule are expected to be finalized soon, especially after the BCCI appointed a new full-term secretary, Devjit Saikia, and treasurer, Prabhtej Singh Bhatia, during a Special General Meeting in Mumbai on January 12, 2025.

As for the venues for key matches, Kolkata’s Eden Gardens will host both the opening match and the final, following the tradition of holding these fixtures in the home city of the previous season’s champions, the Kolkata Knight Riders. The SunRisers Hyderabad, who were the runners-up in IPL 2024, will also host two playoff matches.

Regarding the IPL 2025 teams, several franchises have made significant changes to their rosters. Mumbai Indians (MI) have retained key players like Suryakumar Yadav, Rohit Sharma, and Jasprit Bumrah, while also adding new faces such as Bevan-John Jacobs, Mitchell Santner, and Trent Boult. Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have retained a core group including MS Dhoni, Ravindra Jadeja, and Ruturaj Gaikwad, and have added players like Rahul Tripathi and Sam Curran.

Other teams like Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), Punjab Kings (PBKS), Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), Delhi Capitals (DC), Gujarat Titans (GT), Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), and Rajasthan Royals (RR) have all made multiple additions to their squads, bolstering their chances for the upcoming season.

The IPL 2025 is expected to kick off with an exciting clash between Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bangalore on March 22, 2025, at the iconic Chepauk Stadium. The tournament promises to showcase a highly competitive season with the reigning champions Kolkata Knight Riders looking to defend their title.

IPL Updates

In addition to IPL updates, BCCI vice-president Rajiv Shukla mentioned that the squad for the upcoming Champions Trophy will be announced by January 17 or 18, and confirmed that the venues for the Women’s Premier League (WPL) are finalized and will be revealed soon.

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 will kick off a week later than initially planned, with the season now set to begin on March 21, 2025, in Kolkata. The final is scheduled for May 25 at the same venue. The change in dates follows a possible request from broadcasters to delay the start due to the Champions Trophy final taking place on March 9. However, broadcasting sources have denied making such a request.

The tournament’s opening match will feature Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bangalore on March 22 at Chennai’s Chepauk Stadium. Kolkata Knight Riders, the reigning champions, will defend their title, and Eden Gardens will host both the season opener and final. The Sunrisers Hyderabad will hold two playoff games in Hyderabad. Teams have finalized their squads, with several big names and exciting new players added to the rosters, setting the stage for a highly competitive season.
