The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is preparing to launch a groundbreaking American communications satellite that could enable mobile phones to make direct calls via space. The mission was just confirmed by Union Minister of Science and Technology Jitendra Singh, who said, “We will be launching a US satellite for mobile communication in February or March.” Mobile phone voice communication will be made possible by this satellite. The mission will be fascinating.

The satellite, developed by AST Space Mobile, brings innovative technology that allows standard smartphones to connect directly with satellites for voice calls. The satellite, named Bluebird Block 2, is expected to be launched aboard ISRO’s Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV). Weighing approximately 6,000 kilograms, it features a massive 64-square-meter antenna capable of providing both voice and broadband internet connectivity. This innovation is particularly promising for remote and underserved regions, where terrestrial mobile networks are limited or unavailable.
