Jalgaon incident occurred on Wednesday, January 22, in Jalgaon district, Maharashtra, when twelve passengers lost their lives and at least eleven others were injured after jumping off the Pushpak Express. This tragic event unfolded when rumors about a fire on board the train caused panic among passengers. In the ensuing chaos, many passengers leaped from the train, only to be struck by the Karnataka Express, which was running on an adjacent track. The accident took place around 4:50 pm near Pardhade railway station, located in the Pachora taluka of Jalgaon district.
Of the injured, four passengers are reported to be critically wounded. A swift response followed the incident, with officials from the Ministry of Railways, including the Divisional Railway Manager of Bhusawal, quickly arriving at the scene (Jalgaon). A medical team and state government rescue teams were also dispatched to provide assistance.
Maharashtra’s Chief Minister, Devendra Fadnavis, expressed deep sorrow over the incident at Jalgaon and shared his condolences on social media, describing it as an unfortunate tragedy. He confirmed that local authorities, including Minister Girish Mahajan and the Superintendent of Police, were on site to manage the situation. The district administration was working closely with railway authorities to ensure a coordinated response. Ambulances were dispatched, and hospitals were put on standby to treat the injured.
The tragic sequence of events began when the Pushpak Express, en route to Mumbai, came to a sudden halt near Pardhade station, possibly due to ongoing track work. As the train stopped, sparks reportedly emerged, leading some passengers to believe there was a fire on board. This panic triggered a mass exodus, with passengers scrambling to leave the train. Unfortunately, the Karnataka Express, which was running on the adjacent track, struck some of the passengers who had jumped off the Pushpak Express, leading to the deadly outcome.
Sandeep Jadhav, a passenger aboard the Pushpak Express, described the chaos, noting that the sparks from the train created a fearful atmosphere, convincing passengers that they needed to escape immediately. The situation escalated rapidly, resulting in the catastrophic collision with the oncoming Karnataka Express.
Railway spokesperson Swapnil Lila confirmed that the initial information suggested the train had stopped due to a technical issue, with the priority shifting to providing medical aid to those injured. The local administration quickly coordinated emergency services, including dispatching eight ambulances, and preparing both general and private hospitals for the victims. Emergency equipment such as glass cutters and floodlights was also made available to assist rescue teams.
Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw expressed his condolences over the incident at Jalgaon, confirming that he had received detailed reports from Railway Board officials. He directed that all necessary medical support be provided to the injured passengers and reiterated his sorrow for the families of the deceased.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah also shared his sympathy and took to social media to reassure the public. He mentioned that the local administration was providing all possible support to the victims. Shah conveyed his deepest condolences to the families of those who perished in the accident and wished for the swift recovery of the injured.
