As of Wednesday afternoon, the outage tracker Downdetector revealed significant surges for Facebook (over 100,000 outage reports) and Instagram (70,000 outage reports over usual). The number of outage complaints peaked about 1:10 p.m. ET and then started to fall.
Similar increases in reports were seen for WhatsApp, another Meta-owned program, and it seemed that Facebook Messenger was also affected. These outages also affected USA TODAY writers, with some reporting blank Instagram home screens for over three minutes.
According to the outage tracking website, 68% of users experienced problems with the app, 21% reported difficulties logging in, and 11% reported difficulties accessing the Instagram website.
According to data provided by Downdetector, 89 percent of WhatsApp users have trouble sending messages, 9 percent have trouble using the program, and 2 percent have trouble making voice calls.
The website claims that at least 50% of Facebook users are having problems with the app, 34% are having trouble logging in, and the remaining users are having problems with various services.
