The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI)

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has extended the deadline for residents to update their Aadhaar details for free until June 14, 2025. Initially set to conclude on December 14, 2024, this extension gives individuals more time to make necessary changes to their Aadhaar information, particularly their demographic details, without incurring any charges. After June 15, 2025, any Aadhaar update request made at physical centers will incur a fee of ₹50, in line with the current offline fee structure. Therefore, this extension presents an opportunity for Aadhaar holders to ensure their records are up-to-date at no cost.

Why You Should Update Your Aadhaar Details

Aadhaar has become an essential identity document used for various services, including opening bank accounts, filing income tax returns, accessing government subsidies, and more. As people move, change jobs, or experience other life changes, their Aadhaar details, including address, should reflect these updates. Furthermore, UIDAI has strongly recommended that residents, especially those whose Aadhaar was issued more than a decade ago, update their Proof of Identity (POI) and Proof of Address (POA) documents. This ensures that their records are accurate and avoid any discrepancies during official procedures or identity verification processes.

An outdated Aadhaar record can cause issues when trying to access services, as it may lead to confusion or delays. Therefore, it’s important to act now and update any incorrect or missing information before the free update window closes.

How to Update Your Aadhaar Address Online

Updating your address on the Aadhaar system is an easy and convenient process that can be done entirely online through the Aadhaar Self-Service Update Portal. Here’s a detailed step-by-step guide to help you through the process:

Step 1: Access the Aadhaar Self-Service Update Portal

To begin, you need to visit the official Aadhaar Self-Service Update Portal. You can easily access it by searching for “Aadhaar update” in any search engine or by directly visiting the UIDAI website. Once on the portal, you’ll find the option to update various details, including your address.

Step 2: Log in with Your Aadhaar Details

On the portal, you’ll be prompted to log in using your Aadhaar number and the OTP (One-Time Password) that will be sent to the mobile number registered with your Aadhaar. If you haven’t registered your mobile number with Aadhaar, you won’t be able to receive the OTP, and you may need to update your contact details offline by visiting an Aadhaar enrollment center.

Step 3: Select the Option to Update Address

After logging in, you’ll be directed to a dashboard where you can choose which detail you’d like to update. Select the option labeled “Proceed to Update Address” to begin updating your address. At this point, you’ll be asked to enter your new address, which will be updated in your Aadhaar database.

Step 4: Upload Proof of Address (POA)

Next, you’ll be asked to upload a scanned copy of your Proof of Address (POA). The UIDAI accepts various documents as valid POA. Some common examples include:

– Utility bills(electricity, water, or gas bill)
– Bank statement or passbook
– Voter ID
– Driving license
– Ration card
– Passport

Make sure that the document you upload is clear and legible, with all relevant details visible, including your name and address.

Step 5: Submit the Update Request

Once you’ve entered your new address and uploaded the supporting PoA document, you can submit your request. Upon submission, the portal will generate a *14-digit Update Request Number (URN)*. This URN is a unique identifier for your update request and allows you to track the status of your update in real-time.

Step 6: Track the Status of Your Request

After submitting your request, you’ll be able to track the progress of your Aadhaar update using the URN on the UIDAI portal. Updates can take a few days to process, but once the process is complete, you will receive a confirmation that your Aadhaar has been updated.

Step 7: Download Your Updated Aadhaar Card

Once your request is successfully processed and your details are updated, you can download a new version of your Aadhaar card. This updated card will reflect the new address and can be used for any official purposes, such as applying for loans or submitting proof of identity at various government services.

Additional Considerations

1. Verify Your Documents Before Uploading: To avoid delays or rejection of your update request, ensure that the uploaded POA document is accurate, clear, and meets UIDAI’s guidelines. If the documents are not valid or not easily readable, the request might be rejected.

2. Accuracy is Key: Double-check the information you input, especially the address, to avoid mistakes. Any errors in the address may lead to the rejection of your update request, requiring you to start over.

3. Check for Compatibility: Make sure that your address is in line with the format accepted by UIDAI. For example, if you live in a building complex, include the apartment number and the complete address details as per the guidelines.

4. Aadhaar Update Service is Free Until June 2025: Remember that you can make these updates for free until June 14, 2025. After this, you will incur a ₹50 fee for any updates done at physical Aadhaar centers, so it is advisable to complete your updates before this deadline.

5. Mobile Number Update: If you need to update your registered mobile number, this process cannot be done online and requires you to visit an Aadhaar Enrollment Center. It is important to keep your mobile number up-to-date to receive OTPs for future updates or verifications.

6. Online and Offline Options: While updating online is convenient and free, offline updates at physical centers will incur a fee post-June 2025. If you prefer in-person assistance or face difficulties during the online process, you can visit a nearby Aadhaar Enrollment Center.
