India’s First Vande Bharat Sleeper Train Successfully Completes Trials: A New Era in Railway Travel

The Indian Railways is poised to revolutionize long-distance train travel with the launch of the Vande Bharat Sleeper Train. The train, which consists of 16 cars, underwent comprehensive testing by the Research Designs & Standards Organisation (RDSO) on January 15, 2025. The trial covered a 540-kilometer stretch on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad route, demonstrating the train’s capacity for long-haul travel. The results of the trial were promising, showing the train’s ability to maintain high speeds and stability across varying terrains, which is essential for overnight travel.

This Vande Bharat sleeper set was manufactured at the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai and was completed on December 17, 2024. Following its completion, it was transported to the Kota Division, where it underwent additional short-distance trials on a 30-40 km stretch. During these test runs, the train reached speeds of up to 180 km/h, providing a smooth and stable ride. The successful trials highlight the train’s reliability and readiness for operational deployment.

Comfort and Design: A New Standard in Sleeper Travel

To ensure the timely production of these sleeper trains, Indian Railways has placed a major order for propulsion electrics, which will support the manufacturing of 50 rakes (train sets) of 24-car Vande Bharat Sleeper Trains. This contract, awarded to two leading Indian manufacturers, is a clear indicator of India’s commitment to becoming self-reliant in railway technology. The first batch of these trains is expected to be ready within two years.

Looking ahead, full-scale production of the 24-car Vande Bharat Sleeper Trains will commence in 2026-27, further boosting the country’s railway infrastructure and providing a world-class alternative for travelers.

Travel Classes and Features

The Vande Bharat Sleeper Train will feature three classes of travel, ensuring that passengers can choose the level of comfort that suits their preferences and budget. These classes are:

• AC 1st Class: The most luxurious option, offering spacious and premium berths for those seeking ultimate comfort.
• AC 2-Tier: Designed for mid-range budgets, this class offers comfortable berths in a more economical setting.
• AC 3-Tier: A budget-friendly option that still provides excellent comfort and convenience for travelers.

With a total capacity to accommodate 1,128 passengers, the train is designed with spacious berths and cutting-edge safety features. These include crash buffers for impact protection, deformation tubes to absorb shocks, fire barrier walls for enhanced security, and automatic doors for smooth and easy access to compartments.

Safety and Testing Before Launch

Before the Vande Bharat Sleeper Train is officially launched, it will undergo a final series of tests to ensure complete safety and functionality. The Research Designs & Standards Organisation will conduct a thorough safety analysis based on the trial runs, while the Railway Safety Commissioner will evaluate the train at its maximum speed to guarantee that it meets all necessary standards.

Once these evaluations are complete and the train is deemed safe and efficient, the Vande Bharat Sleeper Train will be launched for passenger service. This will mark the beginning of a new chapter in Indian railway travel, where passengers can experience world-class services on long-distance journeys.
